Agnetha Faltskog, Dionne Warwick, Gloria Estefan

Women in music 60s thru the 80s – so many talents indeed. I narrowed my choices down to one from each decade, and here they are in order:

“Her Majesty of Melisma,” says The Top Tens, ‘no one can handle the treacherous key changes and time signature shifts of the Bacharach /  songbook as can classy, cool sophisticated Dionne Warwick.’

” There were a lot of great female singers of the 70’s, but as far as vocal quality, control, and crystal clarity, Agnetha Faltskog is probably the best choice.” Here she is with the hit that showcased her vocal prowess –

And “one of the world’s best-selling artists,” Gloria Estefan is also ‘the most successful crossover performer in Latin music of all time.’  On a side note I find it interesting that she has a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in French. But Words… 🙂

Carnation and tea

spinning dreams is free

Fotor062816133It’s a dreary day in the office. Read: marking finals that never seem to end. A vase of red pink carnations is the only cheer in a sea of academic bits and pieces. I made it til sign out time by imagining tea served on the porch of an antebellum mansion.canvas45Weekend Flowers * Haiku my Heart * Floral Fotos

CommArts - Bangkok U, Maneeya Ville

Once upon a time I lived in a four-storey townhouse in a ville with guards that saluted residents as they drove in and out of the gates. Next door was a local actress whose Mom doted on my spoiled rotten poodle. Behind us were neighbors who led lives even more glamorous than ours; and Enya’s arpeggio highlighted a domestic chore I did for fun: going through then hubby’s wardrobe for the help to sort out.

Oh yes, I had a live-in maid too. Luxury dinners with business executives, shopping in stilettos and fancy holidays were routine. To make it short, I had it all. Well, except for some epoxy that should have glued and held that life together. I do not want to go back though, despite all the fun. But it was a damn good life while it lasted, and I can smile at it now.

‘Some commercial this is,’ I thought when I wandered into this clip. The narration and images almost made me forget it was a commercial. I haven’t been thinking of such stuff at all since grad school where we analyzed loads of commercials and their impact on society. By virtue of its message, this one tops it all; at least in my books. It reflects many of those things I hold dear and want to keep forever.

Businesses on hold
helicopters surveying
Bangkokians wade through

Mighty Chao Phraya
swells and inundates Thailand
  watery grave threat

Factories afloat
ancient capital submerged
water rages on

Hear thou Mae Kong Ka!
chants ascend the temple spires
flooding is a scare.
Quick info:
*Thailand faces worst flooding in 50 years.
*Bangkokians – Bangkok residents
*Chao Phraya – translated as River of the Kings, it is Thailand’s major river
*Mae Kong Ka – Thai goddess of water. The Bangkok Metropolitan Authority has proposed a ceremony to beg the water gods to stop the flooding

Nobody survives
Yet there’s a happy ending
A rare film to watch

*Melancholia. Anyone?

***

Mom plays Andante
  Mozart hollers a C six
Spoiled, silly canine

*Mozart is my eight year-old poodle. He howls a very high pitch, whenever I play pieces on the piano, especially those composed by his namesake, e.g. Piano Concerto No. 21. When I tell him, “shut up Mo,” he uses my right foot as his pillow and promptly falls asleep making it difficult for me to step on the pedal.

Flare

A little note: I was scared of Santilmo or St. Elmo’s fire until a teacher in high school explained it from a scientific point of view. The first haiku is my way of appreciating science and knowledge in general for helping me overcome a silly fear. The second – I like to think that if my dreams are flared up, it will be easy to chase them, even if they are on wings 🙂

Sun blazes, blood spills

Heaven pours, reactions flare
Science backs Elmo

***

Diaphanous wings
  flutter on a garden path
flaring up my dreams
